When Is Lewes Bonfire 2026?
Lewes Bonfire is held on 5 November. In 2026 that’s Thursday 5 November. Because it falls on a Thursday this year, organisers and the emergency services are expecting larger crowds than usual.
Can I Go to Lewes Bonfire if I Don’t Live in Lewes?
The official answer is: please don’t. Sussex Police, East Sussex Fire & Rescue, the local councils and the bonfire societies all ask people from outside the town to support bonfire events closer to home instead. The combination of large crowds, a huge number of fireworks and Lewes’s narrow streets makes crowd safety a real challenge, and travel restrictions are deliberately designed to limit how many people come in.
The event is also described as unsuitable for children, young families and dogs because of the crowds, noise and smoke.

Who Organises Lewes Bonfire?
Lewes Bonfire isn’t a council event. It’s organised by the town’s seven independent bonfire societies, each with its own procession, costumes, bonfire site and fireworks display: Cliffe, Commercial Square, Lewes Borough, South Street, Southover, Waterloo and Nevill Juvenile. The societies spend all year fundraising and building for the night, and collect money for local charities along the procession routes.
The History of Lewes Bonfire
Lewes marks two things on 5 November. The first is the failure of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605. The second is the memory of the 17 Protestant martyrs burned at the stake in the town in the 1550s, during the reign of Mary I — which gives Lewes Bonfire a far older, more defiant feel than most Bonfire Night events.
Today the night combines torchlit processions, marching bands, effigies of historical and topical figures, and several separate firework displays across the town.
What Happens on the Night?
From the early evening, the societies march through the town with flaming torches, drums and bands. Later, each society holds its own bonfire and fireworks display at its own site. Effigies — often of well-known figures from the year’s news — are traditionally burned. It’s loud, smoky and crowded, which is part of why the organisers are so clear that it’s best enjoyed by locals.
