There’s a point on the curve where a home display stops looking like a home display. The bursts get wider, the pacing tightens, the finale arrives as one continuous wall of colour rather than a series of cakes with gaps between them, and the audience stops chatting. Getting there doesn’t require a professional license. It requires the right kit, a bit of planning, and the discipline to fire it properly.
This guide is for anyone who wants to move beyond basic selection boxes and build a display that feels like a show. We’ll cover how to pick the right cakes, barrages, and compound pieces, how to structure the timeline, and what to watch for on the night.
What makes a display kit “premium”?
A premium display kit isn’t just a bigger box. It’s a curated set of pieces that work together:
- Multi-shot cakes and barrages – the backbone of any display. Look for barrages & cakes with mixed effects (peony, willow, brocade, strobe) so the sky doesn’t look the same every 20 seconds.
- Compound cakes – multiple cakes fused together internally. One ignition gives you 2–4 minutes of continuous firing. Our compound cakes save setup time and guarantee pacing.
- Rockets for height – rockets push the display above the cake level. Use them as punctuation between cake sequences.
- Finale pieces – large single-ignition barrages or a compound cake for the final 60–90 seconds.
Structuring the display
1. Opening (first 60 seconds)
Start with 2–3 medium cakes fired in quick succession. Different effects, same height. This grabs attention and sets the colour palette.
2. Middle (2–4 minutes)
Alternate cakes and rockets. Fire a cake, then 2–3 rockets while the cake is still breaking. Then the next cake. This keeps the sky busy without gaps.
3. Pre-finale (60 seconds)
A compound cake or two large barrages side by side. This ramps the intensity.
4. Finale (60–90 seconds)
Your biggest compound cake or a volley of 4–6 large barrages fired simultaneously. This is the wall of colour.
Suggested kit compositions
Small garden (8–10m safety distance)
Medium garden / field (15–25m)
- 4–5 x 150–200 shot cakes
- 2 x compound cakes (compound cakes)
- 10–12 rockets
- 1 x large single-ignition barrage for finale
Large field / open space (25m+)
- 6–8 large cakes (200–300 shots)
- 3–4 compound cakes
- 15–20 rockets
- 2 x large finale barrages fired together
Practical tips
- Stake everything – cakes and barrages must not tip. Use 25mm wooden stakes and gaffer tape.
- Portfire or blowtorch – don’t use a lighter. You need a reliable, hands-free ignition.
- Firing order written down – number each piece with masking tape. Don’t rely on memory.
- Clear the fallout zone – check the safety distance on each label. Keep spectators upwind.
- Have water/sand buckets – never light a second piece until the first is fully finished.
