The gender reveal has become one of the great modern family occasions, and pyrotechnics are now as much a part of it as the cake. We sell more pink and blue products every year, and we’ve seen every version of the reveal: the quiet one in the garden with a smoke grenade each, the big one at a farm with a firework finale, the indoor one with cold sparks because it was raining sideways.
This is the full guide. What each option does, what it costs, how to keep the secret, and how to make sure the moment is safe as well as memorable.
There are five main ways to reveal with pyro, and they suit different times of day, spaces and budgets.
Smoke grenades. The most popular by far. A hand-held tube that pours dense pink or blue smoke for around a minute when you pull the ring. Daylight only, outdoors only, works in any garden, costs very little, and gives the best photos. Have one for each parent and spare.
Smoke barrages and cakes. A daytime firework that fires coloured smoke in a series of shots from a cake. More of a spectacle than a grenade, still daylight, needs the spectator distance on the label. Good for a bigger crowd and a lawn.
Gender reveal fireworks. Evening reveals cakes and rockets that burst pink or blue. These need darkness, the standard safety distances (8 metres for F2, 25 for F3), and a nominated adult to fire. The pay-off is a proper firework moment on video.
Confetti cannons. Hand-held, indoor-safe, no smoke, no heat. Twist and fire, and a burst of pink or blue confetti fills the air. Ideal for indoor parties, as a second beat after the smoke, or for younger guests who want to take part.
Cold spark machines. For an indoor or evening reveal in a venue, a hired cold spark machine gives a fountain of sparks that can be timed to the announcement. No smoke, no fire risk, safe to use close to guests. The colour comes from lighting, balloons or cake.
Smoke needs light. If the reveal is the centerpiece of an afternoon party, smoke is perfect; plan it for a clear part of the garden with a plain background and a gentle breeze. If the party is in the evening, smoke will be invisible after dusk, so switch to fireworks for the reveal and keep the smoke for photos earlier in the day.
Fireworks need dark. In summer that means 10pm or later; in winter, 5pm is fine. Fireworks can be used until 11pm on any night in England and Wales, so a summer evening reveal is legal but late.
If a friend or relative knows, they order and they hide the packaging. Simple.
If the parents are ordering their own, the best trick is to order both colours, hand both to the person who knows, and let them bring the right one on the day. The spare becomes a prop for the photos. Or the person who knows can phone us, tell us the colour, and we’ll arrange the order, so the parents never see it.
Be careful with packaging. Some products are colour-coded on the outside. Keep everything boxed until the moment.
The double pull. Parents stand together, a grenade each, count of three. The most-copied format because it works.
The big box. Grenades pulled inside a large box or a giant balloon box, opened by an older sibling, so the colour billows out.
Smoke then confetti. Pull the smoke, count two, and fire the confetti cannon. Two beats in one video.
The rocket reveal. At dusk, a single gender reveal rocket fired by the grandparent-to-be. Small, dramatic, and a good option when a full display is too much.
The finale reveal. A pink or blue cake fired as the last piece of a short display, so the reveal is the climax of the evening rather than a stand-alone moment.
The cold spark walks. Indoors, a cold spark machine either side of the couple as they walk through, with the venue lighting switching to the colour.
Film in landscape. Put the light behind the camera or to the side. Give the couple a plain background: sky, hedge, fence or wall. Count down out loud so the pull and the reaction land on the same clip. Start filming ten seconds early. If you’ve two phones, have one on faces and one wide. Everyone keeps their faces clip.
For smoke, stand so the wind carries it across the frame, not into the lens. Keep the grenade low and behind the person holding it so the tube isn’t the star of the photo.
Smoke grenades: hold by the base, at arm’s length, away from clothing. The tube gets hot. Keep it off dry grass, never throw it, never use it indoors or in a marquee, and drop the spent tube in a bucket of water. Keep dense smoke a couple of metres from light fabric; the dye can tint.
Fireworks: read the label, respect the distance, brace cakes upright, fire rockets from a tube, light with a portfire at arm’s length, one sober adult only. Never return to a dud; wait 30 minutes and soak it.
Confetti cannons: point upward, away from faces, and clear the confetti before anyone slips on it.
Cold sparks: hire them from someone who explains the set-up. Ours comes with instructions.
Pets: inside, curtains drawn, before anything is lit.
Two weeks before: decide the format, order the products, and give the person who knows the colour the job of holding them. One week before: check the delivery has arrived, keep it boxed and out of sight. The day before: walk through the garden, decide the spot, check the wind forecast and the light. On the day: set up the phones, brief the person filming, agree the countdown, and do it while the light is good and before the cake comes out. Afterwards: soak the spent tubes, gather the confetti, and keep the spare grenade for the photos.
A smoke reveal for two with a spare costs less than a round of drinks. Adding a confetti cannon each is a small step up. An evening reveal with a gender reveal cake or rocket, plus smoke for the daytime photos, sits in the middle. A reveal built into a short firework display with a coloured finale, or a cold spark hire for a venue, is the top end and still a fraction of what people spend on the cake and the balloons.
